The MT Assessments Tool is a platform that enables assessors to evaluate learner assignments against defined Learning Outcomes (LOs) and Assessment Criteria (ACs). It combines intuitive interfaces with AI-powered analysis to make grading more consistent, evidence-driven, and efficient.
Effective assessment requires more than matching keywords. Assessors must consider depth, clarity, and alignment with the level descriptor of the qualification. For example, Level 5 learners should show autonomy, critical thinking, and synthesis — not just knowledge recall.
The AI in this tool checks submitted documents by scanning for matching language, command verbs (e.g. 'Evaluate', 'Explain', 'Analyse'), and contextual alignment with the intent of each LO and AC. It does not just keyword-match but evaluates semantic closeness using transformer models trained on academic language patterns.
'Partial' status when learners begin to address the AC but do not meet the full intent.
'Not Met' for vague, incorrect, or missing evidence.
‘Met’ should only be used when the AC is clearly and fully satisfied, including appropriate depth and technical accuracy.
Remember: AI is a support tool — not a replacement for your professional judgement. Always review the suggestions and adjust accordingly.
The Welcome Panel is the central hub where you can see, your available credits, and the number of registered learners. You can also purchase top up credits instantly.
You will see a button labelled 'Purchase More Credits'. Clicking this opens a secure popup to the payment portal. Credits are used whenever you run an AI analysis on learner work.
There is also an Auto Top-Up facility. Here you can set your monthly budget, your threshold and top-up value. Once you have added your card details and activated the facility, the system will automatically top-up your account at the amount given when your credits get below the threshold. These details can be changed at any time or cancelled if needed.
This panel lists all learners under your account. You can:
Learners must be assigned to a qualification for assessments to appear. You can filter by any of the fields using the search bar.
In this panel, you manage your qualifications and their units. Each qualification is a bundle of one or more units.
If you added the qualification yourself, you can:
Qualifications that you add are available to all the user community but they will be unable to change the qualifications that you have created.
Units must have LOs and ACs set up properly in the Units Panel to function correctly in assessments. When there are multiple assessment criteria these must be separated by commas, please ensure that you have removed any extra commas if copying and pasting AC’s into the platform.
This panel lets you create and structure Learning Outcomes (LOs) and Assessment Criteria (ACs).
The accuracy of your LO/AC structure is critical for both human and AI assessments.
For qualifications with merit and distinction criteria, these will need to be entered as separate learning outcomes and assessment criteria with the Merit / Distinction grades set accordingly.
There is also the option to determine whether all learning outcomes / all assessment criteria need to be met or just some met for either / both. When the learning outcome states the learner “Must” do / be able to do something this will automatically be set as mandatory.
Once you have added and selected a learner you will find a list of their assessments here. You can create an assessment by clicking the plus icon then choosing a unit and also the status of the assessment, completed / in review etc. The status can be changed at any time to help you keep track.
To start the assessment of the learner you must upload a Word document containing the learners assignment using the file upload facility on this page. You must upload an original Word document, converted PDFs or HTML disguised as a Word document will not work very well and formatting will be lost or even not load at all.
Once you have uploaded your learners assignment a cloud icon will appear next to that assessment. Clicking it will bring up the Assessment Tool panel.
This is the most important panel — where assessment happens. The submitted document is shown in the lower part of the window, and all LO/ACs on the top.
Press the 'Analyse' button to run the AI engine. This costs one credit and returns a full analysis of which LOs and ACs are likely Met, Partially Met, or Not Met.
The tool offers a judgement for each LO. You can override these manually. It will also calculate the overall grade for the learner depending on whether/which LOs and ACs have been met.
The AI uses OpenAI models to check for meaning, argument quality, alignment with command verbs, and relevance. For example, it knows that ‘evaluate’ requires a balanced analysis, not a simple description.
To add feedback, Ctrl+Click anywhere in the learner’s document. A comment cloud appears where you can:
These comments are auto saved.
Once comments have been added you can go to them quickly by pressing the circle indicator next to the matching learning outcome at the top of the page.
To change the feedback and judgement on specific learning outcomes press the colored pill to the left of the learning outcome. This allows you to change the judgement and feedback text.
You can finally export the full report into a PDF document using the 'Feedback Report' button at the bottom of the window.
